Green heart

Green-hearted leaf
begrudgingly recedes
as crimson and orange encroach
cheered on by the chilly wind
​the departing sun
change pushing out what worked
what fed the tree
last month's chlorophyll feast

new wine will burst the old veins
if they don't withdraw
and let the cold usher in a new season
that looks like death
but is a rebuilding
a refuelling
a re-rooting
a restful retreat
